Free Culture and Creative Commons licenses allow the reuse of art, music, and literature creating new works from old. So, for example, my song “Chess Man Blues” is licensed Creative Commons Attribution or CC-BY. This means anyone can use “Chess Man Blues” in their project whether it’s a game, a video, or a podcast as long as they provide correct attribution: “Chess Man Blues” by Larry Heyl.

There are many other Free Culture licenses, like the GPL for software, each tailored to a specific need. Not all Creative Commons licenses are Free Culture. The non-commercial and no-derivatives licenses are more restrictive than their Free Culture licenses while still providing for some reuse. Public domain works are completely free. And on the wall of Nefertari’s tomb, built in the twelfth or thirteenth century BCE, someone painted the queen playing Senet, one of three Ancient Egyptian board games whose pieces have come down to us, along with Mehen and Hounds and Jackals."
